Orcas Island High School is a small, 136 students (10/2013) in grade 9-12, high school located in the villiage of Eastsound on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Students attend six classes in a rotating block schedule, with three classes meeting each Tuesda-Friday and all classes meeting on Monday. Students are offered a variety of choices in core and elective courses. Students graduating from OIHS must complete 22 credits to graduate. OIHS is an academic high school. All students are expected to challenge themselves academically and to learn to balance the high expectations of the classroom with their other student activities. 

In 2014 U.S. News and World Report awarded Orcas Island High School a Silver Medal as the 23rd best high school in Washington State and the 1,068 best in the United States. 

Orcas Island High School has been a frequent recipient of the Washington State School Achievment Award, based on student performance on the annual state assessment. In 2013 OIHS was recognized for Overall Excellence and for High Progress.

AP Scores

In 2012-2013 50 students at OIHS took a total of 62 AP exams. Students took tests in English Lit, Human Geography, US History, Calculus, Computer Science, Biology and Physics.

Students who take the AP exam will receive a score ranging from 1 to 5. The College Board defines the scores as follows:

  • 5 -Extremely well qualified to receive college credit
  • 4- Well qualified to receive college credit
  • 3- Qualified to receive college credit
  • 2- Possibly qualified to receive college credit
  • 1- No recommendation to receive college credit

Orcas Island High School students have a number of extra-curricular activities and clubs available to them. These inlcude varsity sports: both boys and girls soccer, football, girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, baseball, and softball. The Orcas Vikings compete in the 1A/2B Northwest Athletic conference as a 2B school. Viking athletes often qualifies for state-playoff competition in several seasons. OIHS students also compete in crew and sailing as club sports where they have frequently been ranked as one of the top programs in the state and nation. Our athletes are committed to upholding the Viking Way: Strength, Honor, and Courage. School clubs include: Environmental/Ecology Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, The 'Do Something Club', Japanese Club, and more each year.
